Here’s How You Can Make Your Pores Look Smaller

Pores. We hate them so much that we’re up for absolutely anything that can help us get rid of them. Pore vacuum? Egg-white mask? Name any pore-erasing treatment or product and we’re sold! But, ladies, here’s the truth: Our skin actually ~needs~ pores—to house hair follicles and natural oils, and to let the skin breathe. And while we hate to be the bearer of more bad news, another sad truth is that you can never eliminate them completely. Don’t fret, though, because there are ways to minimize their appearance and achieve almost-perfect skin. 

But before we delve into the hows, we have to know what’s causing those annoyingly enlarged pores first to know how to tackle them head on. Other than genetics, which predetermine the size of your pores, how much oil your skin produces and how much collagen it contains are also factors that affect pore size. Additionally, pores expand if they become clogged with impurities such as excess oil, dirt, dead skin, and makeup.

Truth be told, laser treatments are proven to be most effective in reducing pore size, but they don’t exactly come cheap. Your next bet? A ~really good~ and consistent cleansing routine using products with ingredients that help detoxify while also reducing sebum production. Also helpful: Pore-minimizing and blurring makeup to give the illusion of smoother-looking skin.

Here are some quick face-saving tips for your pore problems:

1. Use a deep-acting cleanser.

Keep your oil levels under control and effectively cleanse your skin by investing in a facial wash that’s formulated to dig deep down, ridding skin of deep-seated dirt, grime, and makeup. This total solution from Korean brand Deoproce featuring rice flour and mixed cereal extracts is designed to dissolve dead skin cells and unclog pores while leaving skin smooth, soft, and well-hydrated.

Pro tip: Before you begin, apply a warm cloth or towel over your face for around a minute or two. This helps open up your pores for a deeper cleanse.

2. Exfoliate regularly.

The key to making pores appear smaller is to keep them clear. Take your regimen one step further by exfoliating your skin at least twice or thrice a week to really pull every toxin out and prevent further buildup. Use a gentle exfoliator that has detoxifying ingredients such as charcoal, clay, retinol, and squalane for good measure and be sure to focus on the nose and cheeks, where there’s usually more oil production.

Pro tip: Apply ice or cold water on your face after cleansing and exfoliating to tighten up the pores and avoid future clogging.

3. Treat yourself to masks and peels.

May it be at home or at a clinic, removing impurities and providing extra moisture through peel-off and facial masks can help reduce the appearance of pores as the surface becomes firmer and more supple. Look for products with both detoxifying and hydration-boosting benefits for plumper skin.

Pro tip: Never prick your skin and tackle clogged pores on your own! Once a month, do yourself a favor and visit your derma or a facialist for a professional extraction and to avoid damaging your skin.
